A new araucarian fossil species from the Paleogene of southern Argentina Ameghiniana
Panti,Carolina; Césari,Silvia N.; Marenssi,Sergio A.; Olivero,Eduardo B..
A new Araucariaceaea from the Paleogene of Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina is described. Araucaria pararaucana sp. nov. has imbricate, ovate-lanceolate leaves with an acute apex, characterized by the presence of discontinuous and longitudinally oriented stomatal rows separated by epidermal cells, which may be slightly sinuous. Stomatal guard cell surface is granular. These fossil leaves are compared with the extant sections Bunya, Intermedia and Araucaria. Their anatomical characters along with the external morphology suggest a close affinity with the extant southern Patagonian species A. araucana (Molina) K. Koch. The record of this new late Eocene species provides more evidence for a probable unique representation of Section Araucaria in the area...

A new family of brachyuran (Crustacea: Decapoda: Goneplacoidea) from the Eocene of Java, Indonesia Naturalis
Schweitzer, C.E.; Feldmann, R.M.; Bonadio, C..
A new family, Martinocarcinidae, must accommodate the monotypic genus Martinocarcinus Böhm, 1922. The genus displays a unique combination of dorsal, sternal and abdominal characters justifying placement in a new family. The Martinocarcinidae joins several other now extinct Eocene families that flourished at that time, supporting the long-held view that the Eocene was a time of radiation within the Brachyura.

A new protodidelphid (Mammalia, Marsupialia, Didelphimorphia) from the Itaboraí Basin and its implications for the evolution of the Protodidelphidae Anais da ABC (AABC)
CARNEIRO,LEONARDO M..
Abstract The Protodidelphidae was a group of marsupials that lived in Gondwana from the early to middle Eocene. Among South American faunas, the Itaboraí Basin calls attention by the presence of four genera and six species. Herein is described Bergqvistherium primigenia gen. et sp. nov., a new protodidelphid from the Itaboraí Basin - lower Eocene. This taxon differs from other protodidelphids in the smaller size, developed entocristid, less brachyo-bunoid adaptations, and entoconid more mesial than the hypoconid. These characters are recovered as plesiomorphies of the Protodidelphidae, supporting Bergqvistherium as an early-divergent lineage of this group. The Protodidelphidae fauna of the Itaboraí Basin is represented by less specialized “basal” taxa,...

Osteoderm microstructure of Riostegotherium yanei, the oldest Xenarthra Anais da ABC (AABC)
BERGQVIST,LÍLIAN P.; PEREIRA,PAULO VICTOR LUIZ G.C.; MACHADO,ALESSANDRA S.; CASTRO,MARIELA C. DE; MELKI,LUIZA B.; LOPES,RICARDO T..
Abstract: Riostegotherium yanei from the Itaboraí Basin, Brazil, is the oldest known Xenarthra. This paper aims to describe the internal morphology of the osteoderms of Riostegotherium yanei from the perspective of histology and micro-CT approaches, expanding the available data on cingulate osteoderm microstructure. Seven osteoderms of R. yanei were used for the internal microstructure description and eight of Dasypus novemcinctus for comparison. The osteoderms of Riostegotherium yanei lacks the diploë-like structure typical of glyptodonts but has a three-layered structure composed of two layers of non-Haversian compact bone enclosing a central layer of primary and secondary osteons. This internal organization is distinct from other Astegotheriini of...

Paleogene flora of the Sloggett Formation, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina Ameghiniana
Panti,Carolina; Marenssi,Sergio A; Olivero,Eduardo B.
In the southeastern corner of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego, southernmost Argentina, small outcrops representing Late Eocene-Early Oligocene sedimentation in fluvial environments, are referred to the Sloggett Formation. This unit crops out along the shores of Bahía Sloggett, where it is represented by carbonaceous mudstones, sandstones and conglomerates. A new paleofloristic collection of this site, originally reported by Andersson at the beginning of the 20th, was collected and analyzed, revealing the presence of gymnosperm and angiosperm leaves. Conifers are represented by probable Podocarpaceae and the presence of Araucariaceae is confirmed by leaves with preserved anatomy. Angiosperms, although fragmentary, have been grouped in morphotypes, which...

Palynology and paleoenvironmental significance of the Tunal Formation (Danian) at its type locality, El Chorro creek (Salta, Argentina) Ameghiniana
Volkheimer,Wolfgang; Novara,Martín G.; Narváez,Paula L.; Marquillas,Rosa A..
The palynologic investigation of samples from the Tunal Formation at El Chorro creek (Salta, Argentina) resulted in the recovery of terrestrial assemblages of pollen and spores associated with freshwater algae (Pediastrum spp. and Scenedesmus sp.). Of the 43 species of sporomorphs identified for the Tunal Formation so far, 28 species are cited here for the first time. The spores and pollen indicate a Danian age at the type locality. Sedimentary proxidata including abundant evaporites suggest intervals of at least seasonal arid environmental conditions. In contrast, the palynologic assemblages recovered from the organic rich dark shales indicate the presence of swampy areas and forests surrounding them. The dominance of Verrustephanoporites simplex...

[Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans, Krakow, Poland, 2013: A tribute to Pál Mihály Müller / R.H.B. Fraaije, M. Hyžný, J.W.M. Jagt, M. Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: A re-evaluation of extinct European crabs referred to the genus Calappilia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 (Brachyura, Calappidae) Naturalis
Busulini, A.; Beschin, C.; Tessier, G..
A reassessment of extinct species, fourteen in all, found in Europe and attributed to Calappilia has been carried out. For each species a short diagnosis is provided, and where necessary, its systematic position is reconsidered. Calappilia dacica lyrata is here elevated to species rank, while C. mainii is reassigned to Stenodromia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 and C. sexdentata is considered to be a nomen nudum. Photographs are provided of all type specimens available to us; most of these had so far been known only from (partially inaccurate) line drawings. For the first time, well-preserved chelipeds are described for the genus, having been found in articulation with a carapace of C. dacica.

Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: Neozanthopsis americana (Decapoda, Brachyura, Carpilioidea) from the Middle Eocene Cane River Formation of Louisiana, USA, and associated teleost otoliths Naturalis
Schweitzer, C.E.; Feldmann, R.M.; Stringer, G.L..
A large collection of Neozanthopsis americana (Rathbun, 1928) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) Cane River Formation in Louisiana, USA, represents the first opportunity to describe the species in detail. Detailed analysis of associated teleost otoliths and other vertebrate remains documents a palaeoenvironmental setting characterised by a soft-sediment, inner-shelf setting with normal salinity under tropical or subtropical conditions. Anatomical and morphometric analysis of 21 of the better-preserved crabs demonstrates that gender discrimination cannot be made from dorsal carapace characteristics and that the sample represents post-juvenile individuals. Exocuticle and endocuticle are preserved on some specimens and document the presence of erect...

The Paleogene Richmond Formation of Jamaica: Not an impact related succession - a comment Naturalis
James, K.H..
Donovan & Pickerill published a short paper in 2008 which was essentially a comment on just part of an earlier contribution (James, 2005) on a broader topic. Although the latter was published in Caribbean Journal of Earth Sciences, to which Donovan & Pickerill originally submitted their paper, this journal has not been published since late 2005. Of necessity, this discussion has moved elsewhere.

The Paleogene Richmond Formation of Jamaica: Not an impact-related succession Naturalis
Donovan, S.K.; Pickerill, R.K..
James speculated that Paleogene ‘flysch-wildflysch’ deposits of the Caribbean region may all have a related genesis associated with one or more bolide impacts. The principal arguments used to promote this idea were: (1) that many successions may have been dated incorrectly and are actually related to the end Cretaceous (K/T) event and/or other bolide impacts; and (2) common olistostromes may have been transported by impact-related phenomena. The deposits discussed by James included the Richmond and Font Hill formations of Jamaica. The Richmond Formation of the Wagwater Belt is Paleogene, not Cretaceous, and olistostromic blocks are a common feature of the sedimentary succession of Jamaica. No extraterrestrial event need be invoked to support their...
