Abstract The Protodidelphidae was a group of marsupials that lived in Gondwana from the early to middle Eocene. Among South American faunas, the Itaboraí Basin calls attention by the presence of four genera and six species. Herein is described Bergqvistherium primigenia gen. et sp. nov., a new protodidelphid from the Itaboraí Basin - lower Eocene. This taxon differs from other protodidelphids in the smaller size, developed entocristid, less brachyo-bunoid adaptations, and entoconid more mesial than the hypoconid. These characters are recovered as plesiomorphies of the Protodidelphidae, supporting Bergqvistherium as an early-divergent lineage of this group. In the southeastern corner of the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego, southernmost Argentina, small outcrops representing Late Eocene-Early Oligocene sedimentation in fluvial environments, are referred to the Sloggett Formation. This unit crops out along the shores of Bahía Sloggett, where it is represented by carbonaceous mudstones, sandstones and conglomerates. A new paleofloristic collection of this site, originally reported by Andersson at the beginning of the 20th, was collected and analyzed, revealing the presence of gymnosperm and angiosperm leaves. This publication presents the systematics of monolete and trilete spores, and polyplicate, inaperturate and bisaccate pollen grains recovered from outcrops of the Cuayuca Formation, State of Puebla, southern Mexico. Species belonging to the following genera are described and illustrated: Cicatricosisporites, Deltoidospora, Foveotriletes, Leptolepidites, Lusatisporis, Retitriletes, Stereigranisporis, Verrucingulatisporites, Polypodiisporites, Pinuspollenites, Pityosporites, Ephedripites , and Cupressacites . Pteridophytes and bryophytes spores constitute 13.5% of the assemblages and gymnosperms 7.3%. Angiosperms, to be discussed on later papers, dominate the assemblage. |

A reassessment of extinct species, fourteen in all, found in Europe and attributed to Calappilia has been carried out. For each species a short diagnosis is provided, and where necessary, its systematic position is reconsidered. Calappilia dacica lyrata is here elevated to species rank, while C. mainii is reassigned to Stenodromia A. Milne Edwards in Bouillé, 1873 and C. sexdentata is considered to be a nomen nudum. Photographs are provided of all type specimens available to us; most of these had so far been known only from (partially inaccurate) line drawings. For the first time, well-preserved chelipeds are described for the genus, having been found in articulation with a carapace of C. dacica. |

A large collection of Neozanthopsis americana (Rathbun, 1928) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) Cane River Formation in Louisiana, USA, represents the first opportunity to describe the species in detail. Detailed analysis of associated teleost otoliths and other vertebrate remains documents a palaeoenvironmental setting characterised by a soft-sediment, inner-shelf setting with normal salinity under tropical or subtropical conditions. Anatomical and morphometric analysis of 21 of the better-preserved crabs demonstrates that gender discrimination cannot be made from dorsal carapace characteristics and that the sample represents post-juvenile individuals. James speculated that Paleogene ‘flysch-wildflysch’ deposits of the Caribbean region may all have a related genesis associated with one or more bolide impacts. The principal arguments used to promote this idea were: (1) that many successions may have been dated incorrectly and are actually related to the end Cretaceous (K/T) event and/or other bolide impacts; and (2) common olistostromes may have been transported by impact-related phenomena.
